GERMANY INVADES POLAND

September the 1st, 1939:
Adolf Hitler’s massed forces crossed the line.
Nazi Germany invaded Poland.

For reasons rather hard to understand,
Chamberlain still dithered. Would there be war?
The Germans had already bombed Warsaw.
What more did he want? Would Hitler withdraw?

Some hope! But later the very same day,
That’s what Chamberlain asked. Idle, I say,
And craven. “Every minute’s delay
“Now means loss of life,” claimed Arthur Greenwood,
For Labour. The House of Commons came good:
“Speak for England, Arthur!” cried Amery,
A Tory. No more of this knavery:
Our “national honour” was at stake.
The Commons were angry, make no mistake,
The Cabinet too. It was make or break.
